John Wright Oakes ARA (1820-1887)

The landscape painter J. W. Oakes was born in Cheshire, and trained as an artist in Liverpool, under Bishop. He first exhibited in the Liverpool Academy, later becoming a member of that body. His first exhibit at the Royal Academy was in 1848, and he subsequently produced a long series of landscape paintings which were sent to the Summer Exhibitions. He moved from Liverpool to London in 1859, and became ARA in 1875.
