UPTON & KEXBY U 10’S CC V SLEAFORD 14TH MAY 2009
Upton & Kexby, Gainsborough and District’s only representative in the Lincoln Youth League at Kwik Cricket/Primary School Level secured their first win in 2 years when they defeated Sleaford CC on the old Lincolnshire County Ground on Thursday Evening.
Upton & Kexby won by 17 runs in an excellent all round display which stunned the following supporters making the long trek to Sleaford in the gloom, very rewarding.
Sleaford chose to bat first in the poor light. The Kwik cricket rules provide for each team to start with 200 runs and to bat in pairs for 4 overs with unlimited lives. Each wicket lost counts as a deduction of 8 runs. Sleaford quickly lost 4 wickets for the first pair with Jake Hearn Jake Hutchinson, captain Henry Cawte and Harry Street all taking a wicket. Sleaford rallied but with some excellent fielding from Jamie Roberts and further wickets from Ben Hearn and Ben Williamson Sleaford were restricted to 288 for 6 an adjusted score of 240.
Upton & Kexby batted in
deteriorating light with a good start from Jake Hearn and Dominic
Bolderson adding 12 runs for the loss of only 1 wicket. Henry Cawte
and Jake Hutchinson adding a further 26 again for
the
loss of only 1 wicket. Hutchinson stuck what appeared to be the shot
of the match with a perfectly struck on drive for 4 runs. A mature
display by youngster Jamie Roberts and his partner Ben Williamson
added a further15 runs without loss leaving the last pair of Harry
Street and Ben Hearn with an adjusted score of 237 needing 4 runs to
win without losing a wicket. They duly obliged with Ben Hearn
equalling Hutchinson’s on drive with a perfectly executed off drive
which raced to the boundary for 4. The final pair added a further 20
runs without loss to run out comfortable winners by 17 runs with a
score of 273 for 2 wickets an adjusted score of 257.
This was a truly remarkable victory not only in defeating a team of the calibre of Sleaford but also in the quality of the performance.
