Information wanted about Upton House Farm and Upton Lodge Farm 1912- 1919
I was born in 1914 at Upton Lodge Farm which my father, William Anyan
Strawson farmed as a tenant of his father. My grandparents, Henry Strawson
and Mary Strawson (nee Anyan) owned Upton House Farm and Upton Lodge Farm.
They lived in Upton House.
My grandfather died on13th July 1912 and my grandmother sold the farm on
Wednesday 9th October 1912.
I believe Upton House Farm was bought by the Slinger family at the sale in 1912.
I am unclear what happened from then on and wonder if anyone in the village can
help ?
One of my earliest memories is of the small white coffin of my infant sister,
Hilda, in the front room of Upton House. She died in the influenza epidemic of
1918. As far as I know my parents were still living and farming at Upton Lodge
Farm and my grandmother living at Upton House in 1919.
I would like to know if this is in fact so; did William Anyan Strawson continue
as tenant at Upton Lodge Farm and my grandmother remain resident at
Upton House until 1919? In 1919 my parents and my brother and I moved to a
rented farm at Aslackby where we were for about a year and then we moved to Old
Hall, Wilsthorpe where we were for many years. I would also be interested
to know if Upton Lodge Farm is farmed today or
any information about any of my family in the village in those days. I can
remember several village names, including Mr Kelsey the Upton milkman
and the Threadgolds. I wonder if any members of these families are still
in Upton ?
