6th Staines Scout Group
Founded
and registered at H.Q. on the 16th of November 1937. Sponsored by Christ Church,
Staines, originally meeting in the church hall in Kenilworth Gardens, Staines.
The group was disbanded during the Second World War and reregistered on the
9th June 1958, continuing to meet at Christ Church hall.
The group moved H.Q. to Carter Base, next to the Matthew Arnold School, off
Berryscroft Road, Staines in 1977. The G.S.L. at the time was Dave Howlett.
As well as running the group, Dave, small team of parents and the Venture
unit were responsible for the project. The H.Q. was named after Jeff Carter,
a member and sponsor of the group for many years.
The group moved H.Q. again in 1996 when the land that Carter Base was on was
subject to a compulsory purchase order for housing development.
Woodbury Base, Burgess Way, Knowle Park, Staines was opened on the 15th March
1996 by the then Chief scout Garth Morrison. A bagpiper was also present at
the opening.
Woodbury Base got it's name through a combination of the surnames of the two
members of the group primarily responsible for the project - G.S.L. Steve
Woodison and Bill Kislingbury.
