The Armed Man - A Mass for Peace
Lacey Green Singers performed this work by Karl Jenkins at St. John's Church on Sunday 17th October to a large audience. Even with extra chairs brought in, there were no spare seats that I could see, something which must have gratified the performers and conductor, as they had worked very hard for some months on what is obviously a difficult work and the performance showed this. I know the singers have great confidence in their young conductor, Cathie Kaye to whom they give the credit for their achievements.

It is a dramatic work based on a 15th century French song (L'homme arme) and the mass, performed Sunday with percussion - Matt James and Louis Catlett, Trumpets played by Ian Graves and Ron McKenzie, 'Cello Georgie Ross, piano Cheron Mole, keyboard Rachel Courtney. Cathie herself played flute at the beginning and near the end, with the drums, giving the right atmosphere of marching soldiers.

The choir itself provided the various soloists and all must be congratulated on doing so well because the timing and melodies in a modem of this sort call for much practice and skill, although of course having confidence in the conductor does help.

It was a wonderful evening of music, followed by refreshments in the school hall where everyone could relax and meet up with friends.
