Brief history

Under 21

A traditional part of the Staffordshire Congress while it was being run regularly, was the

Staffordshire Under 21 Championship.

Following last year's successful congress, the competition is being reintroduced for 2008.

The highest scoring Staffordshire player in the Premier section, who was under 21 on 1st September 2007, will receive the title "Staffordshire Under 21 Champion".

ECF Grand Prix

This is an English Chess Federation Grand Prix event.

Registered with the ECF for game fee.

How is it run?

The Staffordshire Congress is not a knockout tournament.  You will be given points after each game according to the result.

Staffordshire Chess Congress

Details may change slightly from year to year, but this page is intended to explain the basics of the Staffordshire Chess Congress.  It should give you an idea of how it is organised, and what to expect if you are interested in taking part.  More details can be found either on entry forms, or from Mrs Traci Whitfield (Contact details in the right hand column).

Timetable
Saturday 12th April 2008
Round 1   10.00 am - 1.30 pm
Round 2   2.00 pm - 5.30 pm
Round 3   6.00 pm - 9.30 pm

Sunday 13th April 2008
Round 4   10.00 am - 1.30 pm
Round 5   2.00 pm - 5.30 pm

Players may request a half-point bye in any one of the first 4 rounds at the time of entry.

Rate of play
36 moves in 90 minutes, followed by a 15 minute quickplay finish.

If a player does not arrive within 30 minutes of start of play, their opponent will be re-paired if possible.

Refreshments.
Light refreshments will be available.

How is its organised?
There are three separate sections.

Premier
Players graded under 180

Major
Players graded under 140

Minor
Players graded under 100

Ungraded players should provide details of any congress and league results, or former grades.

Prizes.
For each Section
First:  £120
Second:  £80
Third:  £50

Depending on the number of entries, additional grading and junior prizes will be awarded in each section.

Entry fees
In each section:
Adult   £19
Junior   £15
(Junior players must have been Under 18 on 1st September 2007)

ECF Direct Members can claim a £2 refund on production of their card at the event.

Entries received after 6th April 2008 will incur an additional late entry fee of £4.
Entries on the day will incur a fee of £7.

Travel

Car:
Leave the M6 at Junction 10.  Follow signs to Walsall along the A454.  At the junction with the A34 turn left (signposted to Bloxwich).  At Bloxwich go over the mini roundabout and at the traffic lights, turn right into High Street.  The leisure Centre is a short distance on the left.  Entry to the car park is a little further on.  Alternative parking is also available behind the leisure centre, reached via Field Rd (just before the leisure centre).

Rail:
Bloxwich and Walsall stations are both near the venue.
