Junior Chess Congress Welcome to Junior chess in Staffordshire.
This page is intended to explain the basics of the Staffordshire Junior Congress.
It should give you an idea of how it is organised, and what to expect if you are interested in taking part.
You can get full details about it from Mrs Traci Whitfield (contact details in the right hand column.)
What is the Junior Congress? The Junior Congress is held in Staffordshire once each year.
It is a one day tournament, normally held in September or October.
You may hear some people call it the Staffordshire Junior Championships.
|

Who can take part?
Entry is open to all players aged under 18 - not just those from Staffordshire.
You must be under 18 years old on 1st September in the year you take part.

Where is it held?
The Congress is normally held inside school grounds.
In recent years, it has been held either in Stafford or Newcastle-Under-Lyme.
|
 |
|
What is the timetable?
The tournament lasts from roughly 9am to 5pm.
There are usually 6 rounds, with the first round starting at 9.30am.
Each player plays one game per round.
Each round is followed by a break for refreshments etc.
The presentation of prizes etc takes place just before 5pm.
|
 |
|
Rate of play.
Each player is expected to use a chess clock, and has 30 minutes to complete all the moves in each game.
|
 |
|
Refreshments.
Throughout the day, light refreshments (hot and cold drinks, assorted rolls, crisps, sweets, cakes, fresh fruit etc) will be available.
|
 |
|
Prizes.
Most of the entrance money, less grading fees etc, will be awarded as prizes.

How are the age groups organised?
Entries are divided into eight age groups: Under 8, under 9, under 10, under 11, under 12, under 14, under 16 and under 18.
e.g. You can only enter the under 11 group if you were under 11 years old on September 1st.
During the tournament, you will only play against opponents from the group you start in.

In each section of the competition, a Staffordshire Champion trophy will be awarded to the highest placed eligible player.
Also in each section, there is a Staffordshire trophy for the highest placed eligible girl.
Where a girl wins the Staffordshire Champion trophy in any section, the next highest placed eligible girl in the same section will be awarded the Girls trophy.
The winners name will be engraved on the trophy.
