Ours is a unique country that’s recognised around the world for its caring nature, love of sport and innovative spirit. And this year, four significant organisations that have helped shape our culture of today will be celebrating their centenary.
Plunket, Home of Compassion, Scouting and New Zealand Rugby League are all well-known, well-respected organisations that have played a large part in the lives of New Zealanders.

New Zealand

New Zealand has 18,007 Scouts (as of mid 2008) served by Scouting New Zealand. Scouting was introduced to New Zealand in 1908 by Col  David Cossgrove and the island nation became a member of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement in 1953.

Scouting New Zealand is very internationally minded, participating in many Asia-Pacific Region and World Scout camps and Jamborees.
There is a strong emphasis on conservation of natural resources. Scouts frequently help in natural disasters such as sand bagging rivers during flooding.
