The Cefn Coed Colliery Winding Engine
Cefn Coed Colliery Museum is based on the surviving buildings of Cefn Coed Colliery, Crynant. The highlight of the displays is the Worsley Mesnes Horizontal Double Cylinder Steam Winding Engine of 1927 that formerly wound No.2 shaft. The No1 shaft engine, a 1911 Markham, has gone but the winding gear remains, as does the boiler house with six Lancashire Boilers and the single cylinder Llewelyn & Cubitt sinking engine latterly used as the shaft maintenance capstan.
The engine suffers badly from the present obsession with guarding, deemed necessary because the engine is turned over electrically.
