Old River Station

ASME Visit, April 2005

The engine house is a very attractive circular building.

The Old River Station was recently the subject of a visit by members of the ASME. The pictures on this page were taken by member Steven Harrod who has kindly made them available. Naturally he retains full copyright and all other legal rights to the images. If you wish to contact him contact me via the email address on the home page and I will put you in touch.

The presence of human figures in the pictures makes it much easier to appreciate the sheer size of the engines.

The engines and pumps go down deep into the subsoil. The member in the red shirt is approximately at ground level. The horizontal shaft carries the valve gear eccentrics. Each level is served by catwalks.

The valve eccentrics. The valve rods appear to have a certain amount of angular flexibility built in. Is this a function of Corliss gear? Looks like a governor in the background.

They go down a long way.Apparently at times of high water they flood the basement to reduce the buoyancy of the engine house.

Very nice instrument panels on each engine.
