Murray's Hypocycloidal Vertical Engine

Various bits of the motion can be seen on the base of the engine.

A unique engine designed by Matthew Murray to circumvent the patents held by James Watt. Very few engines appear to have been built to this design. The engine was built in about 1805 (the patent was taken out in 1802) by Fenton Murray and Wood of Leeds and worked at J Bradley's Foundry in Stourbridge. It probably drove a pump like the rather similar engine from the same foundry that is now in the Henry Ford Museum.

The drive pinion can be seen on the floor behind the perspex screens.

A general view of the engine in situ.

As will be seen from the photographs the engine was receiving some attention at the time of my visit and the main drive pinion will be seen sitting in front of the engine. Well it's an excuse for another visit.
