The big Tandem Compound Mill Engine was built by Pollitt & Wigzell of Sowerby Bridge in 1909 for what is now Victoria University, Manchester. It was used in the thermodynamics lab and is thus fitted with a number of measuring devices including a band brake on the "spare" flywheel, and a surface condenser to enable condensate to be measured.
