Churches Together in England

Churches Together in England is the national body set up by the churches in 1990, and has partner bodies in Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Churches Together in Britain and Ireland is the successor body to the British Council of Churches, and co-ordinates the work of the four nations.

At a national level Churches Together in England has 30 Member Churches or Councils of Churches and 27 Bodies in Association. Churches are also continuing to develop ecumenical commitment locally and at intermediate (county) level.

Churches Together in England is a visible sign of the Churches' commitment as they seek a deepening of their communion with Christ and with one another, and proclaim the Gospel together by common witness and service. Its strength comes from people from different traditions finding new ways to work and worship together.

Churches Together in England unites in pilgrimage those churches in England which, acknowledging God's revelation in Christ, confess the Lord Jesus Christ as God and SAaviour according to the Scriptures, and, in obedience to God's will and in the power of the Holy Spirit, commit themselves.

  • to seek a deepening of their communion with Christ and with one another in the Church, which is His body, and

  • to fulfill their mission to proclaim the Gospel by common witness and service in the world to the glory of the one God, father, Son and Holy Sprit.

Their are four Presidents of Churches Together in England:

The Archbishop of Canterbury - Most Reverend Dr. Rowan Williams

The Archbishop of Westminster - His Eminence Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor

The Free Churches Moderator - Commissioner Elizabeth Matear

The four Presidents nominated by the other churches in England - Bishop Nathan Hovhannisian including Orthodox, Black Majority, Lutheran and the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers)

The Presidents meet regularly to discuss matters of concern to Churches in England. Their meetings are facilitated by the General Secretary of CTE

In June 2002 the then Presidents signed a Personal Covenant in the presence of HM the Queen, at Windsor. This has subsequently been signed by the new Presidents.
