Mothers Union
For our March meeting it was a pleasure to have Shirley with us not only to prepare our Lent service but also to lead it.
Her opening remarks were; What are we doing for Lent? Traditionally this is a season of sacrifice and self-denial. Giving something up for Lent.
Some give up treats and little luxuries or look at certain vices of weaknesses we have or give to charity.
There is however, another important way of looking at this season with quiet thoughts and actions.
However, perhaps in this modern world we lose the opportunity for this and we also need to think on things of God.
Shirley said" We have lost the vital ability to 'Stop and Stare" so she based her service on the words of a poem which many will have heard or even learnt at school. 'What is this life' by William Henry Davies.
What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.
No time to stand beneath the boughs And stare as long as sheep or cows. No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.
No time to see, in broad daylight, Streams full of stars, like skies at night.
No time to turn at Beauty's glance, And watch her feet, how they can dance.
No time to wait till her mouth can Enrich that smile her eyes began.
A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.
For the next half an hour with poems, prayers, proverbs, music and readings we were able to have our time of quiet reflection and to recognise Gods presence in so many things that we take for granted.
So perhaps Lent should also be a time for giving thanks for all the wonderful things there are to life.
Thank you Shirley for giving us the time in which we could just 'Stand and Stare'.
