Animated GIF
This is a sequence of images shown at various speeds ranging from a fraction of a second to multiple seconds. It gives the appearance of movement and animation but it can be jerky.
It is often used for banner adds and attention grabbing images.

Flash Movies
These are refined and smooth graphic images which can portray movement as well as scaling up and down in size. They can also be used for interfaces, site navigators and for linking.

QuickTime Movies
are closer to actual cinema movies which can play within a web site. They can be photographic images, graphics or a combination of the two.
They need to be reasonably small to facilitate speedy downloading on a website.

QuickTime VR Movies (virtual reality)
When viewing the viewer causes the motion and animation. By dragging the mouse an image of an object can be rotated through 360 degrees in all directions. It is an excellent way of showing products as the viewer can examine all sides as if it were in their hand.

Morphing and Transitions
One image can transform into another, as if by magic before your very eyes! The transformation can be quick or slow. A very descriptive way of showing before and after states.

3D Animations
Objects, environments and scenes are created 'in the round' so they can be viewed from all sides.
These are then animated and the viewer gets a real sense of a multi-dimensional reality.

Sound
Speech and music tracks can be added to most of the above to enrich the viewers experience and help convey the desired message.
