BIOGRAPHY

I was born in Northampton on 15 July 1966 and was brought up in Rushden, a small town in East Northants famous for the manufacture of boots and shoes, as well as being the home town of the author H.E. Bates and latterly Rushden & Diamonds Football Club. I was educated at Rushden Boys' School (now demolished and replaced with houses), leaving in 1984 with 3 GCE A-levels and 13 O-levels. I subsequently joined Unilever 's research laboratories at Colworth House near Bedford as an analytical chemistry assistant, completing an HNC in Chemistry, before joining Lipha Pharmaceuticals in 1987 as a QC/Development analyst. During my time with Lipha, I studied successfully for a B.Sc (Hons) in Chemical Science at Nene College in Northampton (now re-named University College Northampton).

In 1990, I left Lipha to undertake full-time Ph.D studies at The Open University in Milton Keynes. My thesis was entitled "Thermal Chemistry of Amino Acids: Competitive Molecular Pathways" and involved investigating the thermal chemistry of amino acids, peptides and their analogues, these reactions being of importance in peptide synthesis, prebiotic chemistry, food and textile processing (click here to read abstract). During my Ph.D I also undertook an industrial training placement at Rhone Poulenc Agriculture in Ongar, Essex, involving the synthesis, analysis and screening of novel herbicides.

After completing my Ph.D in 1993, I joined the pharmaceutical company Pfizer, based in Sandwich, Kent, where I spent 12 years working in the Analytical R & D department before moving into a project and portfolio management role in 2005. I was elected C.Chem MRSC in 1996 and FRSC in 2004. I am currently a management committee member of the RSC-RPSGB Joint Pharmaceutical Analysis Group and chaired the group from 2004-2006.

I have been married to Kate since 1991 and we have two children, Maxwell (12) and Harriet (10), plus a dog, a rabbit and a cockatiel. When I am not restoring our house, I still follow the fortunes of Rushden & Diamonds F.C. and Northampton Town F.C., as well as watching cricket in my adopted home county. I also enjoy cycling, angling in my local rivers and streams, as well as digital photography and local/military history. Our parents still live in Rushden and we visit them 3-4 times a year.
