Sun and church   The eclipsed sun is contrasted with the pinnacles on the local church tower. And no, that's not a mountain range in the background, just clouds!
Study in violet and blue   Close-up
Definitely towards the artistic end of the spectrum, this one. The purple/grey border is actually caused by the plastic body of the slides used as a filter, not some weird atmospheric phenomenon!   The nearest to a close-up I could manage with the lens I then had available gets a little closer to reality, as the crescent sun rides high over the chimney pots.
Solar crescent   I did occasionally manage to get the "filter" in the correct place and the exposure about right, though, resulting in this half-way decent shot. Note that the moon is slightly to the right here relative to the shots above, causing the crescent to point in a different direction. This tells us that this shot was actually taken before those above, as the moon's true motion through the sky is from right to left in the northern hemisphere.
