![]() | The first real confirmation we were definitely in the right place. A symmetrical crescent shows that the moon is clearly heading for a total eclipse. If only we could see a little more of it!
![]() | The closer totality comes, the thicker are the clouds. Things are not looking at all hopeful!
![]() | A final glimpse as everything closes in. All we can do now is observe the phenomena around us and wait for the shadow to rush in from the west.
![]() | As we weren't granted a break in the clouds at the critical moment, this is a shot during totality rather than of it! I've enhanced it considerably, else there would be little to be seen - it's really quite dark during a total eclipse and all the more so under cloud. Note the yellowish light on the horizon though: this is not just lack of cloud but comes from a region not currently in the eclipse shadow.
![]() | And that's as close as it got! The clouds cleared a little after totality but the sky was generally overcast for the rest of the day, as were our spirits.
![]() | The ancients used to think eclipses were caused by a great snake swallowing the sun, and this shot proves they were right! Slightly thin for a serpent, perhaps, but that sinuous body to top left is surely unmistakeable!! (hair? what hair??) |
