Building in Light

The aim of the project was to design a space to display a series of artefacts from the Sir John Soane Museum in London. Inspired by and using the principles set by the museum itself.

The building consists of 14m high insitu reinforced concrete walls which surround a series of carefully positioned concrete plinths.

The walls are hinged to provide structural stability and to form light wells which reflect and diffuse light around the space.

Entrance tunnel frames view of sculpture plinth.

The building constantly changes and animates due to the current weather conditions and the movement of the sun illuminating different areas at different times of the day.

The plinths display figure sculptures from the Soane museum.

Another plinth is situated at the end of the walkway which is intended to create an exhibit of the individual user.

North facing wall diffracts light via stainless steel screen.

Lower level light well reflects light under and around sculpture.
