Multi-purpose Cyclestand

The origin of the design was a response to an international design competition run by Blueprint magazine in conjunction with Design against Crime Research Centre, University of the Arts London, Feilden Clegg Bradley Architects and Velorution to tackle the problems caused by traditional cycle storage facilities.

The aim of my design was to provide a cycle storage facility that:

Overcomes the problems associated with tradition D locks and chains forming little deterrent for determined thieves.

• Prevents the increasing problem of bike part crime (theft of brakes, wheels, tyres etc).

• Eliminates coming back to a cold wet saddle after moderate rain.

• Prevents the degradation of cycle with regard to rust and excessive solar light and heat damage to tyres and other bicycle parts.

• Provides a sleek smooth and aesthetically pleasing appearance; traditional cycle storage facilities often add to the visual clutter of the public realm.

• Provides storage for cycling related equipment, helmets, lights, clothing etc

Long section through unit in horizontal (Cycle cover) and vertical (Shower) position

The design consists of a strong fibre glass shell that pivots over and clamps on to a traditional sheffield cyclestand. Forming a strong barrier to even the most determined cycle thieves.

The unit also has the option of containing an integral shower to enable cycle users to arrive at work fresh and clean.

The concept is loosely based on the extremely successful limpet; a strong shell covering and protecting a delicate and vulnerable interior.

The multi purpose cycle storage design was shortlisted and displayed at the Reinventing the Bike Shed exhibition in London 2006.
