Hanley Hope Centre

I worked closely with a senior Architect in the planning and detailing of the building providing a range of community based facilities on a prominent site in Hanley City centre.

The main aim of the project was to create a building that could forge links with local community groups and schools offering support, training and advice to combat poor health, unemployment and poverty.

The design was made difficult due to the steeply sloping site and the complex functional requirements of the brief.

A multi-phased approach was adopted to meet the tight budget and short programme.

A simple modular steel frame structure with precast concrete floor elements was chosen to enable the building to adapt to the changing requirements of the multiple end users, at the same time providing an extremely economical building solution.

A simple palette of materials was chosen to aid visually impaired building users, the building was also designed to provide wheel chair access to all areas.

The building was designed to be flexible to enable spaces to be used for different activities from sports events to wedding receptions of up to 250 people.

The scheme for the Hanley Christian Pentecostal church was realised with assistance from the Prohelp network and was funded my a number of organisations including the Stokeworks regeneration project, the Department for Education and Skills, the Staffordshire Environmental Fund and the City Council.
