The housing scheme was set in Cley Next to the Sea, Norfolk on a difficult north facing steeply sloping hillside overlooking the nature reserve. The brief called for an environmental sustainable design through a responsible approach to the use of energy - both primary energy embodied in the materials used in construction and the secondary energy expended during the life of the buildings. |

The scheme also made use of the 'free' natural energy provided by the sun, as well as the economies of energy use available through careful siting by providing thermal heat stores, solar management strategies and wind induced natural ventilation. | |||

The design enabled sunlight to enter all houses through out the year without compromising views to the nature reserve. Site section 1:200 @ A3 |

Typical house type sections 1:50 @ A1 The mono pitch roof provides most rooms with dual aspect lighting and provides solar shading when sun is high. Site sectional plan 1:200 @ A1 |

Typical house type plan 1:50 @ A1 The organic plan provides each room with a different orientation giving different views across nature reserve. The central walls provide thermal mass and respond to changes in the movement of the sun. Typical house type section 1:50 @ A1 |

Each residential unit is naturally ventilated by wind induced cross ventilation. Local vernacular materials were used: flint, brick, timber and concrete with recycled aggregate. Construction detail 1:20 @ A1 |
