Although there is a history of a parish in Kidbrooke spanning many hundreds of years, Kidbrooke parish, in modern times, dates back to the Victorian era, with the construction of St. James’ Church in 1867. |
In the late 1940’s it was realised that a daughter church was needed to care for the estates that had been built either side of the Second World War. The result was, after a lot of effort and fund-raising, that in December 1953 St. Nicholas’ Church was consecrated. |
In 1974 the Holy Spirit Church, a “shop-front” church was dedicated, and now serves the Ferrier Estate, a large estate at the south of the parish. |
In 1985 the Kidbrooke Team Ministry was formed and the relationship between the three churches began to change from mother church and daughter churches to that of sister churches. This change together with the effect of a reduction in the number of clergy in the diocese led to the disbanding of the team ministry in September 2002. In May 2002 St. Nicholas’ Church had already become the new parish of |
St. Nicholas, Kidbrooke, while Holy Spirit Church reverted to being the daughter church of St. James’ Church. |
The Rector is now pastor for both the churches of the parish, and there is a lay Community Evangelist developing Christian mission on the Ferrier Estate. |
