1970 Liturgy

THE 1970 LITURGY OF THE WORD
C. - Celebrant. P. - People.

[C. I will go unto the altar of God.

P. Even unto the God of my joy and gladness.

C. Our help is in the Name of the Lord.

P. Who hath made heaven and earth.]

All. We confess to God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, through our own grievous fault. Wherefore we pray God to have mercy upon us.
Almighty God have mercy upon us, forgive us all our sins and deliver us from evil, confirm and strengthen us in all goodness, and bring us to life ever lasting. Amen.

C. May the Almighty and merciful Lord grant unto you pardon and remission of all your sins, time for true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and comfort of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
[Wilt thou not turn again and quicken us, O Lord.

P. That thy people may rejoice in thee?

C. O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us.

P. And grant us thy salvation.

C. Lord, hear our prayer.

P. And let our cry come unto thee.]

C. Let us pray:
Almighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

(THE SUMMARY OF THE LAW

Our Lord Jesus Christ said: Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord: and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: This is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: there is none other commandment greater than these.

On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.

P. Lord, have mercy upon us, and write these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee.)

Then shall be said or sung either or both the Kyries and the Gloria.

Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

Glory be to God in the highest, and in earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty; [and to thee, O God, the only-begotten Son Jesu Christ; and to thee, O God, the Holy Ghost.]

O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesu Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, who takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us.

For thou only art holy, thou only art the Lord, thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

THE SERMON

The CREED shall follow on Sundays and Great Festivals.

I believe in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And of all things visible and invisible:
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God Begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, Begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, By whom all things were made: Who for us men, and for our salvation came down from heaven, And was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, And was made man, And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried, And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, And ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead: Whose kingdom shall have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Ghost, The Lord, The Giver of life, Who proceedeth from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, Who spake by the Prophets. And I believe One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church . I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the Resurrection of the dead, And the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE INTERCESSION

Let us pray for the whole state of Christ's Church.

We beseech thee also to save and defend all Kings, Princes, and Governors, and especially thy servant Elizabeth our Queen, and all who are put in authority under her, that we may be godly and quietly governed.
We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord.

Give grace, O heavenly Father, to all Bishops, Priests, and Deacons, and especially to thy servant John our Bishop, that they may both by their life and doctrine set forth thy true and living word, and rightly and duly administer thy holy Sacraments.

And to all thy people give thy heavenly grace, and especially to this Congregation here present, that they may hear and receive thy holy word, truly serving thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of their life.

We most humbly beseech thee of thy goodness, O Lord, to comfort and succour all those who in this transitory life are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity.
We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord.

We commend to thy gracious keeping, O Lord, all thy servants departed this life in thy faith and fear, beseeching thee to grant them everlasting light and peace.
We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord.

And we yield unto thee most high praise and hearty thanks, for the wonderful grace and virtue declared in all thy Saints, who have been the choice vessels of thy grace, and the lights of the world in their several generations;

[and chiefly in the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord and God, and in the Holy Patriarchs, Prophets, Apostles and Martyrs especially John our Patron,]

beseeching thee to give us grace to follow the example of their steadfastness in thy faith, and obedience to thy holy commandments.

Grant this, O Father, for Jesus Christ's sake, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen.

THE EUCHARISTIC LITURGY

THE OFFERTORY

Let us present our offerings to the Lord with reverence and godly fear.

OFFERTORY SENTENCE

The bread and the wine are placed on the altar and the offerings of the people may be presented.

A Hymn may be sung.

At the Offering of the Bread and Wine these prayers may be said:

C. Blessed art thou, Lord, God of all creation; through thy goodness we have this bread to offer, which earth hath given and human hands have made: it will become for us the bread of life.

P. Blessed be God for ever.

C. Blessed art thou, Lord, God of all creation; through thy goodness we have this wine to offer, fruit of the vine and work of human hands: it will become our spiritual drink.

P. Blessed be God for ever.

Blessed be thou, O Lord God, for ever and ever. Thine, O Lord, is the greatness, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine: thine is the Kingdom, O Lord, and thou art exalted as head above all: all things come of thee, and of thine own do we give unto thee. Amen.

THE CONSECRATION

C. The Lord be with you.

P. And with thy spirit.

C. Lift up your hearts.

P. We lift them up unto the Lord.

C. Let us give thanks unto our Lord God.

P. It is meet and right so to do.

C. It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, Everlasting God.

(Proper Preface)

Therefore with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee and saying:

All: Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord most high.

Blessed is he that cometh in the Name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

C. All glory and thanksgiving be to thee, Almighty God, our heavenly Father, for that thou of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who, by his own oblation of himself once offered, made a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death and sacrifice until his coming again.

For, in the night that he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had given thanks, + he brake it, and gave it to his disciples, saying,

Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.

Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, + he gave it to them, saying,

Drink ye all of this, for this is my Blood of the new testament, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins:

Do this as oft as ye shall drink it in remembrance of me.

Wherefore, O Lord, and heavenly Father, according to the institution of thy dearly beloved Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, we thy humble servants do celebrate and make here before thy Divine Majesty, with these thy holy gifts, which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion, and precious death, his mighty resurrection, and glorious ascension; rendering unto thee most hearty thanks for the innumerable benefits procured unto us by the same, and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we thine unworthy servants beseech thee, most merciful Father, to hear us, and to send thy Holy Spirit upon us and upon these thy gifts and creatures of bread and wine, that, being blessed + and hallowed by his life-giving power, they may become the Body and Blood of thy most dearly beloved Son, to the end that all who shall receive the same may be sanctified both in body and soul, and preserved unto everlasting life.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness, mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving,

[most humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion.]

And here we humbly offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and living sacrifice unto thee, beseeching thee

[that all we who shall be partakers of this Holy Communion may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be fulfilled with thy grace and heavenly benediction, and made one body with him, that he may dwell in us and we in him.

And although we be unworthy, through our manifold sins, to offer unto thee any sacrifice; yet we beseech thee]

to accept this our bounden duty and service, not weighing our merits, but pardoning our offences, through Jesus Christ our Lord: by whom, and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost all honour and glory be unto thee. O Father Almighty, world without end.
All: Amen.

C. As our Saviour Christ hath commanded and taught us, we are bold to say,

All: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen.

THE FRACTION
Here the Celebrant shall break the Bread.

C. The peace of the Lord be always with you.

P. And with thy spirit.

C. Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God.

All: We do not presume to come to this thy Holy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table: but thou art the same Lord, whose property is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the Flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his Blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his most sacred Body, and our souls washed through his most precious Blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: have mercy upon us.
O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: have mercy upon us.
O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: grant us thy peace.

THE COMMUNION

After the Words of Administration the Communicant shall answer Amen.

The Words of Administration may be shortened at the discretion of the Priest.

THANKSGIVING AFTER COMMUNION

C. O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is gracious.

P. And his mercy endureth for ever.

C. Let us pray.

THE PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Or the following or some other Post Communion Prayer may be said:

O Lord our God, thou Saviour of the world, through whom we have celebrated these Holy Mysteries: receive our humble thanksgiving, and of thy great mercy vouchsafe to sanctify us ever more in body and soul; who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

BLESSING

C. The peace of God which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord:

And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be amongst you and remain with you always.

P. Amen.

THE CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Maker of all things, Judge of all men: We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, Which we from time to time most grievously have committed, By thought, word, and deed, Against thy Divine Majesty, Provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, And are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; The remembrance of them is grievous unto us; The burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ's sake, Forgive us all that is past; And grant that we may ever hereafter Serve and please thee In newness of life, To the honour and glory of thy Name; Through Jesus Christ our Lord. The Second Shorter Litany

Let us beseech the all-holy and ever-blessed Trinity to send forth mercy and grace upon us and upon all people.
[O God the Father, have mercy upon us.

Stretch out thy hand upon us, O Lord, and save us, raise us up and defend us. Lord, have mercy

Let us pray for the peace that cometh from above, and for the salvation of our souls.
Let us pray for the peace of the whole world, and for the welfare and unity of the Church of God.
Let us pray for the conversion of those in unbelief and error.
Let us pray for our country, for this place (or city), for this Diocese, and for all that dwell therein.
Let us pray for all Christian people throughout the world.
Let us pray for all Christian Princes and governors, especially our Sovereign Lady, Queen Elizabeth.
Let us pray for all in authority in this land, especially those in this county [or city or place.]
Let us pray for the bishops and clergy of Christ's Church, especially for ... our Bishop.

Scottish Liturgy 1970

NOTES

1. Words contained within brackets may be omitted.

2. Instead of the shorter form of Confession and Absolution the longer form on page 12 in the Appendix may be used and the Comfortable Words may follow. Either form of Confession may be prefaced by: "Let us humbly confess our sins to Almighty God."

3. In place of the Kyries the Summary of the Law as on page 13 in the Appendix may be used, or the Ten Commandments in the longer or shorter form.

4. When the Litany has been said or sung immediately before the Liturgy as part of the service the Intercession should be omitted.

5. Instead of the Prayer for the Church the Intercessions may be offered in one or other of the forms provided in the Appendix page 13.

6. At Ordinations and on Ash Wednesday, Candlemas and Palm Sunday when the rites proper to those days immediately precede the Liturgy as part of the service, all that is appointed to be said before the Collect for the Day may be omitted.

7. At the Offertory, instead of "Blessed be thou" may be used the Offertory devotion on page 16 in the Appendix.

8. The Gloria may be used at the end of the service.
