Parish Priest

Rev Fr Kevin Dow

Fr Kevin was born on 13th July 1974 in Kirkcaldy, Fife, the youngest of 2 boys.  When he was 11 years old his family moved to West Fife, near the village of Kelty, where his mother’s family were based.

After attending Capshard Primary in Kirkcaldy, and Kelty Public School for a year, he then had his secondary education at Beath High School in Cowdenbeath.  A school which has produced at least 3 vocations to the priesthood!

It was whilst in his 5th year, that his Grandfather died suddenly and Fr Kevin started ‘front of office’ in his family business of funeral directing.  Upon leaving school in 1992, he started studying for the Diploma in Funeral Directing, at that time, the only nationally recognised professional qualification in the funeral profession.  After sitting the exams, he qualified as a Funeral Director in 1993 and became a member of the British Institute of Funeral Directors.  Before leaving the profession to study at seminary, Fr Kevin was the Funeral Service Manager for the family’s funeral home based in Kinross.

His activities at that time were involvement in the local parish of St Joseph’s Kelty, and as an assistant Scout leader in Cowdenbeath, Fr Kevin having gained the Chief Scout Award, International Explorer Belt and the Queen Scout Award.

After discernment and prayer, Fr Kevin offered himself to the Archdiocese as a possible candidate for the priesthood and was accepted by the Archbishop to study at Scotus College, the national seminary in Scotland, based in Bearsden.  After six years of study, prayer, formation and pastoral work Fr Kevin was ordained priest by the Archbishop on the 27th June 2003 in St Mary’s Cathedral, Edinburgh, along with Fr Jamie Boyle who is currently Parish Priest of Bannockburn and Cowie. During his time in seminary, Fr Kevin graduated from the Pontifical University of Maynooth in Ireland with a Diploma in Philosophy and the Arts and a Degree in Theology.

Fr Kevin’s first appointment as a priest was to the Cathedral where he was based for a year before being appointed parish administrator of the parishes of Ss Luke & Anne, Newbattle and St Margaret’s, Gorebridge in Midlothian.  His last appointment before coming to St Joseph’s was as Parish Priest of Our Lady & St Bridget’s, West Calder and St Thomas the Apostle’s, Addiewell in West Lothian.  Other areas where he has ministered have included Diocesan Youth Chaplaincy and Chaplain to an HCPT group.
