The Tralee and Dingle Railway

Home History Modelling Dingle peninsula Dingle Tour

Having researched, for the sake of building a model, this narrow gauge railway in the South-west of Ireland, it has become something of a fascination for me.  I have spent ages studying photographs, written accounts of people travelling the line and writing to authors, including David Rowlands who has been of particular help, and as a result have been able to build up a fair picture of this delightful line.

I am a member of Chester Model Railway Club and just over 10 years ago we embarked on the creation of a model of Dingle Station.  This was originally a 'two main board leading to a fiddle yard' layout, but over time was extended to include a section of typical roadside tramway, level crossing (based on Driscoll's crossing a few miles further up the line from Camp) and Lispole viaduct.  The latter had to be reduced in scale by about 10% to fit the size of boards we were using, but still manages to create a pleasing impression of the real thing.  The layout has now reached its zenith at five boards and fiddle yard.

What I hope to do here is create some pages about modelling the line.  There are several people who have produced, or are in the process of producing, models of stock or of parts of the line and I will link to them where appropriate (currently see the Chester Club's 'Dingle' page).  If there is time I may produce diagrams for buildings / structures, tables of photo references and plenty of pictures of the real thing and model.  Several, Including Miles Bevan have written about the modelling of the line, and I will try and include references to those as well.  I have accumulated a pile of stuff and it time to share it!

A brand new site - still under construction - for the Tralee and Dingle Railway. A few dedicated enthusiasts have got together to put this together. Hopefully it will be 'the' definitive site once complete!

An excellent historical site and guide to the rest of the Dingle peninsula

For those with larger tastes try this; 1/4" and 9mm to the foot scale models

A site under development - a model of Annascaul station on the Tralee and Dingle.

Great pictures of the new line from Ted Polet - very photogenic

Site with links for all Irish railways
