Samuel Fellow Of Baliol College Oxford was Godfather to Jane AUSTEN bn 1775, novelist dau of Rev George AUSTEN ( bn 1731 Steventon Bath died 1805) and Cassandra LEIGH (bn 1739 Chawton Southampton). Great Bookham is often considered to be the inspiration for the setting of Jane Austens 'Emma' (1816).  Jane visited Gt Bookham several times to visit her cousin Cassandra and Godfather Samuel.  Jane would have attended St Nicolas Church - view the church as it looked in the late 1700s early 1800s.
