The conservation of ancient buildings is very expensive and time consuming. St Nicolas Church, Great Bookham is Grade I listed and has over recent years been faced with tasks such as structural repair of the tower, complete re-leading of one of the stained glass windows and renovation of the stonework around the windows. Keeping parts of the roof weatherproof is a present priority. It was in 1983 that a number of residents in the village set up the Friends of St Nicolas Church with the objective of raising funds to meet the cost of conserving our beautiful church. This was to be a secular organisation so that non-churchgoers or conservationists could take part. Individual ‘Friends' make an annual donation to the funds, if possible by Gift Aid or Standing Order and the moneys collected are used entirely to fund conservation and repairs. The total amount provided by the ‘Friends' is nearly £90,000. We are dedicated to preserving the heritage of our village and are a Registered Charity No 288769. If you would like to become a ‘Friend' of St Nicolas Church contact the Gift Aid Secretary, David Wiggins, Waysend, 17 Meadow Way, Great Bookham KT23 3NY. Your interest will be much appreciated |
