Servers play an important role in the life of the Church. They carry out
various duties, including preparing the sanctuary and altar for
Services, carrying the processional cross (crucifer), carrying the gospel
(gospeller), carrying the candles (acolytes), receiving the offertory,
assisting with the preparation of the bread and wine and clearing
away after the Service.
Servers contribute to the smooth running of
the eucharist in a variety of ways, including preparation of the
altars and candles, counting out communion wafers for each service,
checking lighting and sound, ensuring readings are open at appropriate pages
prior to the service and washing the chalices and paten after the
service so that they are ready for further use.
At St Nicolas servers wear a long white tunic
(alb) and a yellow cord round the waist (girdle).
Servers are required at the Sunday services
predominantly at the 8 am and at the 10.00 am / 11.15 services.
There are also a few other occasions such as Maundy Thursday, Ash
Wednesday, Christmas Day etc. Duties are undertaken on a rota basis
by a small band of people from the congregation. There are currently
eight regular servers and a few occasional servers. More are welcome!
Anyone wishing to train as a server at St Nicolas
should contact the Rector.
