The Quiz League

The Stockport and District Quiz League has been in existence since 1984.  Currently it has eighteen teams playing in two league divisions.

The season runs from September to May with matches played on Thursday evenings.

There are four main competitions each year: League Division A, League Division B and two knockout competitions (Cup and Plate).

At the end of the season the bottom two teams in Division A are relegated and the top two teams in Division B are promoted.

The knockout competitions run on selected dates throughout the season and are of a slightly different format to league matches.

The Plate is a competition for first-round losers in the Cup.  In both Cup and Plate teams are handicapped according to their average score in league matches.

There are an additional two competitions held in conjunction with the Withington Quiz League:

  • The WIST Cup, contested by a representative team from each league, is played as a pre-season curtain-raiser in September.

  • The WIST Champions’ Cup is a knockout competition between the teams who finished in the top four of both leagues during the previous season.

In December there is a Christmas table quiz open to all teams and at the end of the season there is a table quiz followed by presentation of trophies.

Both these table quizzes are handicapped.  Guest teams are welcome at these quizzes, but are not eligible to win trophies.

Each team pays an annual subscription fee (typically around £30) to cover administrative costs.

There is a combined AGM and pre-season registration meeting in September.

Teams

Some teams play in or close to the town centre, others are found towards the boundaries of Stockport in places such as Marple, Gatley and Dukinfield.

The Quiz

Matches are played at 9 pm on Thursday evenings and typically finish around 10.30 pm.

Teams consist of a maximum of six players and the home team must also provide someone to ask the questions.

Pubs should set aside a room or quieter area for the quiz.  After the quiz it is customary for the home team to provide food (usually in the form of sandwiches).

In the league competitions each team plays every other team in their league division twice: once at home and once away.

The questions for each week’s matches are set by a team without a fixture on that date.

Each quiz has four rounds.  There are no individual questions and teams must give an answer within a thirty second time limit.

Round 1 consists of thirty questions which are asked to either team alternately and answered verbally.  Teams score two points for a correct answer to their own question.

If a team fails to answer, the question is asked to the other team who may score one bonus point for a correct answer.

The questions are paired, so both teams should get a question of similar difficulty on the same subject.

Round 2 consists of ten questions, for which both teams must provide written answers.

If both teams give a correct answer they score one point each, if only one team answers correctly they score two points.

At the end of round 2 there is a break of around ten minutes to allow teams to re-fill their glasses.  Rounds 3 and 4 are of the same format as rounds 1 and 2.

Each quiz has several ‘spare’ questions which can be used as replacements for any questions which may be illegible or obviously incorrect (if agreed by both teams).

The knockout competitions follow a similar format to league matches with one significant difference:

in rounds 1 and 3 the questions are not paired; teams choose questions at random by ‘picking a number’.
