Bassikounou, Mauritania (15°47’N/5°54’W)
This chondrite fell near the village of Bassikounou in the Hodh Ech Chargui province of the south east corner Mauretania on October 16th 2006 and has been classified as Type (H5),S2,(W0) - (H5) = Ordinary chondrite, S2 = shock stage, (W0) = no weathering.
The photograph on the left shows the complete stone displaying a thick and dull black primary fusion crust. The photograph on the right is a close-up of the polycrystalline structure of the interior which is rich in silicate inclusions.
Analysis shows the meteorite's main constituents to be olivine, pyroxene, plagioclase and troilite along with rare metallic copper.
