Discovered in 1836 by British explorer Sir James Alexander, great masses of this meteorite were found and remains of this nickel-iron fine Octahedrite were being used extensively by local Masai tribesmen for spearheads and tools.

The geometric pattern that can be seen on the cut face of this meteorite is called a Widmanstatten Pattern. This is a complex intergrowith of iron and nickel crystals that only occurs at temperatures of over 700ºC.
