The origins of the museum date back to 1969 when the first specimens in the collection were obtained by the founder and current curator, Brian Glover. Growth was slow until 1987 when a substantial bequest from the late Gwendoline Leppard enabled collecting to begin in earnest.

Over the next 10 years or so, the collection grew as specimens were acquired by field trips around the United Kingdom, from donations of items from geo-related companies, friends and relatives and by purchase from a number of domestic and overseas suppliers. A free loans and exhibition service was started in 1990 for local schools in support of the 'evolution' module of the National Curriculum.

By 1996 the initial collection of rocks and fossils had been supplemented with sufficient ancilliary support materials such as displays, models, posters, videos etc to make the formation of a permanent museum a viable proposition and later that year, Stone Museum of Geology was formed as a independent trust.

The Board of Trustees set our Mission Statement as:

Stone Museum of Geology aims to promote awareness of the Earth Sciences through static and interactive displays that combine education and fun for people of all ages.

This has been our guiding principle ever since.

1999 saw the Museum registered as a charitable trust (Registered No. 1075589), the launch of this website and membership of the Association of Independent Museums (No. 2082).

Plans for the future include formal registration with the Museums and Galleries Commission. The acquisition of larger premises to accommodate our ever-increasing collection is a high priority, and we are also looking to purchase a full size dinosaur from Wyoming in the United States (see 'Appeal' page).
