Niobrara, Kansas, USA

This area of Cretaceous chalk is famous for it’s fossil birds. Because of their fragility - bird bones are hollow to keep the animals weight down to make flying easier - bird fossils are extremely rare worldwide, but relatively common here. The birds of this period (120-65 million years ago) are unique in that they still display many reptilian characteristics, such as teeth. All the specimens here are of marine gull-like seabirds such as Hesperornis.
