Situated within the city of Los Angeles, the tar pits of Rancho la Brea are famous the world over for the thousands of mammal bones and complete specimens dating from the Pleistocene (2 million years ago) that have been unearthed there.
Mastodont elephants, dire-wolves and sabre-toothed cats form the bulk of the remains found there, lending weight to the theory that herbivours became entrapped in the sticky tar while trying to drink attracting predators that became themselves trapped.
