Ma Maiden – By Grace Banks

At the door of sleep, I turned and saw

A lass richt by my side

She smiled and said "Come ye tae me –

For I am yer bride."

Her smile sae sweet, but ach, I knew

A dream she hid tae be

For ma sweet Mary's noo lang gane

A distance far frae me

I left, some siller for tae gain

Tae mairry the lass I lo'ed

Oor partin' sweet – she promised me

That she wid aye be true.

Twas three lang years I'd been tae sea

-         Each day I did her mind

Ma bonnie lass, wi raven locks

That I had left behind

The day that I came back, I mind

That well kent road I ran,

I pushed the door – and steppit in

Wi trembling shakkin han's

Her hummin' licht an free

I called, she turned – the smile she gaed

It made ma hert richt sair

Her dark eyes danced – her cherry mou' –

All gone – I'll see nae mair –

For even as her clear voice rang

"Oh Sandy, ye are home!"

A fell hand clasped her comely form

- Ma Mary turned tae stone.
