Katherine Cranborn, daughter of a wealthy landowner, is fiercely independent and modern in her thought. Her father and convention expect a marriage to renowned marksman, Dedrick Hulbert. But Katherine and cavalryman John Rayverne are already desperately and secretly in love.

When Hulbert discovers their rendezvous he challenges John to a duel. A contest John cannot possibly win. Hulbert will withdraw on one condition; Katherine must agree to marry him.

The story's set in the sumptuous surroundings of Arle Court. Dating back to the 1830’s and built in the Gothic Revival style, the house was perfect for a story full of romance and passion.
