The Stained Glass in Saint Paul’s
Church, Brighton
This
page is a virtual guide through the
church, listing the characters and incidents from the bible and church history
who are portrayed.
The
designs for the windows were made by Augustus Pugin (1812-1852) when the
church was first built in 1848 and represent the most complete cycle he
designed for any Anglican church. Pugin
was the leading artist of the early Gothic Revival. The glass was fitted by the
firm of John Hardman of Birmingham between 1848 -1853, beginning with
the great East Window and the chancel lights. The cartoonists were Francis Wilson
Oliphant (1818 - 1859) and John Hardman Powell (11827 – 1895).
