Stroud Rambling Club was founded in 1953 and has been very active since that time. The objects of the club are to arrange a programme of Rambling, Youth Hostelling, Caving, Mountain Walking, Cycling, Pony Trekking, & other outdoor pursuits & to encourage a greater knowledge, love & care of nature & the countryside

Stroud Rambling Club is an independent organisation affiliated to The Ramblers Association for insurance purposes & does not necessarily hold its views

 

The Club has a wide programme of events including:

Full Day Walks    Usually between 10 & 14 miles with a picnic / pub stop mostly in ’The Cotswold area’ Walks start between 8 am - 10 am from Stroud Leisure Centre.

Half Day Walks - Usually 5 to 6 miles, fairly locally starting 2 pm from Stroud Leisure Centre

Weekends - Usually 2 full days walking staying in Youth Hostels or B&B within the UK.

Walking Holidays - Usually 1 - 2 weeks staying in Youth Hostels, B&B or Hotels in both the UK and

abroad. recently we have been to Southern Spain , Isle of Wight, Reutlingen [Germany ], Lanzarote, Guernsey,

Cycling - Usually full day rides and weekends at B&B or Youth Hostels in the UK & abroad.

Caving - Full days caving once a month 

Winter Indoor Meets - With speakers, slides, map reading, demonstrations etc

Social Events - Barn Dances, BBQ, Theatre Trips etc

Horse Riding  Usually once a month on a Saturday

Multi Activity- Special weekends which can contain any of the above &  canoeing, sailing and mountain biking

                                                         Grading System (Rambling & Mountain walking)

Grade 1            Easy low level walks involving little or no hill climbing, mostly on well-defined paths.

Grade 2            Moderate walks, involving short hill climbs, using field paths, which may not be well defined

Grade 3            Harder walking in hilly terrain. Steep gradients & undefined paths or open moorland.

Grade 4            Strenuous  walking  in hilly country and low mountains with undefined paths & rugged terrain.

Nb All paths may be muddy or ploughed fields, adequate footwear is essential.

 

For grade 4 meets every member MUST take:  Mountain Clothing (boots,  waterproof jacket & overtrousers, warm fleece or jumper) Torch,Compass,Map,Whistle,Spare clothing, Emergency rations, Pencil & Paper, Polythene exposure bag,  sufficient Water.

 

If any member has doubts re grading or their fitness they should consult the leader at least 24 hours before.
