Although concerts are our 'bread and butter', we also compete at contests. We compete against other brass bands to improve the standard of our own playing by rehearsing and performing challenging test pieces. Of course you get the added buzz out of doing well at a competition, which makes the months of intense rehearsals leading up to the competition far more worthwhile. Competing also gives us the chance to socialise, have a pint or ten, and have a laugh.

v
We enter a large variety of contests, ranging from laid-back entertainment festivals to the more challenging national competitions. We are now one of Cornwall's highest ranked band's, this feat being achieved after several years of hard work in the lower sections. Despite this we don't like getting bogged down in too much contesting, as more often that not the set music is tuneless and dull. Keeping a good balance between the amount of concert and contest work ensures that our rehearsals are both fun and laid back, and of a good standard.
We concentrate on our own performance when we compete, not that of the other bands that we are up against, which has been the foundation for the new St Stythians Band contest motto;
'Who are we playing for?! US!'
