Tristan Bowden - Solo Cornet

 

Tristan lives in Stithians, and is the son of our solo euphonium player Ray. He works in IT for ABP Falmouth, and enjoys mountain bikes and surfing when not working or playing with the band. St Stythians is the only band Tris has played for, having joined in 1994

 

He enjoys playing anything with a good tune and swing.

 

He doesn't enjoy playing technical test pieces without any tune.

 

His most memorable moments as a player were recording CDs with Lanner and St Stythians bands, as well as winning the South West 2nd section title at Torquay, playing Resurgam.

 

 

Nadine Clements - Solo Cornet

 

Nadine lives in Falmouth, and started playing with the band at the age of 9. She is one of many band members to have to have progressed from our successful academy, and since joining the senior band in 2002 has progressed onto solo cornet.

 

Her most memorable moment as a player was winning the South West Championship '04 with the Youth Band.

 

She enjoys playing music from the charts and 'Favourite Marches and Hymn Settings of the Salvation Army'.

 

She doesn't enjoy playing 'old stuff'.

 

 

Lisa Reeves - Solo Cornet

 

Lisa lives in Stithians, and enjoys horse riding along with band. She started playing with the band at the age of 9, and since joining in the senior band in 2002 has progressed onto solo cornet.

 

Her most memorable moment as a player was winning the South West Championship '04 with the youth band.

 

She enjoys playing marches.

 

She doesn't enjoy playing 'old stuff'.

 

 

Denis Floyd - Soprano Cornet

 

Denis is from Helston, and is bands longest serving member joining in 1953. He is the son of the late Edgar Floyd, who conducted us during our spell in the Championship Section in the '60s. During concerts his wife Betty can be seen dishing out raffle tickets to the audience. When not playing in the band, Denis is a keen cricketer.

 

His most memorable moment as a player was a visit to Munn & Felton's band room with the band during 1961.

 

He enjoys playing Poliuto.

 

He doesn't enjoy playing The King and I, and Army of the Nile.

 

 

Leanne Johns - Repiano Cornet/Percussion

Leanne is a 'multi-talented' player and can literally play every instrument in the bandroom. She started playing with Wendron, and committed herself to the Youth Band as well in 2000, playing trombone. She has recently progressed to the senior band, where she has played percussion and horn before moving onto cornet.

 

Her most memorable moment as a player was winning the South West Championship '04 with the youth band.

 

She enjoys playing film theme music.

 

She doesn't enjoy playing German Oom-Pah music and 'Favourite Marches and Hymn Settings of the Salvation Army'.

 

 

Ivor 'The Jiver!' Young - Repiano Cornet

 

Ivor was born just down the road from Stithians in Falmouth. He has had several jobs over the years, including being a stonemason, royal engineer in the army, self-employed boat builder and RLNI coastguard. Ivor started playing cornet over 60 years ago, and has held positions in the now defunct Falmouth and Mabe bands before joining St Stythians in 1960.

 

His most memorable moment as a player was playing for Falmouth in the national championships at the Royal Albert Hall.

 

He enjoys playing classical music.

 

He doesn't enjoy playing some forms of jazz.

Joe Aynsley - 2nd Cornet

Joe is one of many band members to have progressed from our own successful academy, and has been promoted to the senior band for the 2006 summer season after 3 years learning the Horn. He is a member of the army cadets, and enjoys physical activities such as cycling and jogging. Joe enjoys the relaxed atmosphere at St Stythians, and the socials and contests that go with being a member of the band.

 

His most memorable moment as a player was his first rehearsal with the Youth Band.

 

He enjoys playing anything with a bit of go and tune.

 

He doesn't enjoy playing 'Favourite Marches and Hymn Settings of the Salvation Army'.

 

 

Karen Evans - 3rd Cornet

 

Karen is a product of the band's much acclaimed youth setup, and having started learning cornet in 2001 was recently been promoted to the senior band. She is the daughter of Brian, who is one of the band's many hard working supporters.

 

Her most memorable moment as a player is winning the South West Championship '04 with the youth band.

 

She enjoys playing recent film or chart music.

 

She doesn't NOT enjoy playing any music (how brilliant!)

 

 

Ken White - 3rd Cornet

 

Ken started learning the cornet at the age of 10, and has been playing longer than any other member of the band, having started to learn the cornet in 1939! He brings to the back-row a wealth of experience from time spent in both dance and brass bands. He has recently retired from contesting, but still enjoys performing in concerts with the band.

 

His most memorable moment as a player was the Stenalees contest '56, where he and his band (St Agnes) won several awards.

 

He enjoys playing traditional brass band music.

 

He doesn't enjoy playing modern brass band music.

 

 

Michelle Rolling - Flugel Horn

 

Michelle started playing cornet with us at an early age. She then left to play in the Redruth and Pendennis bands, before rejoining the band in 1999. She now plays the best instrument in the band - that being the flugel horn (ha). She is employed as a Human Recourses Officer for 'The Money Group' and 'Baltic Pine'.

 

Her most memorable moment as a player was winning the areas with Redruth band, qualifying for the national finals in Harrogate and winning promotion to 1st section, whilst playing flugel.

 

She enjoys playing anything with a decent melody.

 

She doesn't enjoy playing 'Concerto de Aranjuez' and Jazz music.

 

 

Vivienne Nicholas - Solo Horn

 

Viv is one of the band's longest serving members, and has recently been promoted to Solo Horn. Viv joined the band in 1981 after a spell at the St Keverne band. She claims that whilst most of her time is taken up by the band, she still finds time to enjoy gardening and cooking! Viv is married to our Bb Bassist John, and is also a member of the Stithians Ladies Choir.

 

Her most memorable moment as a player was accepting the National 3rd Section Champions Trophy from Don Lusher, on behalf of the St Keverne Band in 1976

 

She enjoys playing all kinds of music.

 

 

Sue Noall - 1st Horn

Sue joined us in the summer of 2006 from Porthleven band. She is from St Ives, and enjoys reading, walking, watching horror films from behind the safety of a cushion, good food with a nice 'hooooge' glass of wine! And of course playing with St Stythians.

 

Her most memorable moment as a player was her first contest with St Stythians, this being Bugle 2006, winning the 2nd section with the conducting great John Berryman.

 

She enjoys playing test-pieces

 

She doesn't enjoy playing music with 'hundreds and hundreds of bars of after beats'.

 

 

Sharron Richards - 2nd Horn

 

Sharron is a nursing student, whose hobbies include cross stitch, rug making, family tree and walking. Sharron joined us after a chance meeting with our percussionist Mary at work at Treliske. Sharron has previously played for Camborne Youth, Hayle, Pendennis and Caharrack & St Day.

 

Her most memorable moment as a player was going to Prestatyn to take part in the Pontins '05 experience with St Stythians band, she says "we played well as a team and it was like being with your extended family".

 

She enjoys playing all kinds of music.

 

 

Ray Bowden - Solo Euphonium

 

Ray started playing for  St Stythians in 1954. He left in 1998 to join Lanner band on solo euph, but we were delighted to welcome him back in 2004. Ray used to play for the Stithians rugby team, and sang in the Stithians MV Choir. He has worked as a builder since 1959.

 

He enjoys playing slow melodies with a nice tune.

 

He doesn't enjoy music that is technical for the sake of being technical, and has no obvious tune.

 

His most memorable moments as a player were both a visit to Munn & Feltons band room with the band during 1961, and finishing 2nd in the 2nd section national finals with St Stythians in 1963.

 

 

 

Sam Aynsley - Euphonium

 

Sam is from Stithians, and started learning with the band at the age of 8. Alongside band, he enjoys cycling and drinking. Sam will leave band at the end of the summer season to do a degree in English.

 

His most memorable moment as a player was the Bugle victory under the direction of John Berryman.

 

He enjoys playing swing music, and anything with a bit of life.

 

He doesn't enjoy playing 'Favourite Marches and Hymn Settings of the Salvation Army' and most test-pieces.

Leonard Tresidder - 2nd Baritone

 

Leonard is a trucker, and started learning baritone in his 20's with the band. He was egged on by his daughter Michelle (now our flugel player), who was also learning with the band at that time. He progressed into the senior band in 1979 on 2nd baritone, where he still plays today.

 

His most memorable moment as a player was playing at the national finals in Kensington '92 with St Stythians.

 

He enjoys playing all music.

 

 

Martin Nicholls - Solo Trombone

 

Martin works as a surveyor, and his hobbies include motorcycling, cycling and surfing. Martin signed from Breague band in 2004, and since joining he has played on all 3 trombone seats during the last year.

 

He enjoys playing all types of music.

 

BUT he doesn't enjoy playing 'Favourite Marches and Hymn Settings of the Salvation Army'.

 

His most memorable moment as a player was performing in a duet for Albert Chappell.

 

 

Liz Villers - 2nd Trombone

 

Liz is from Illogan, and enjoys reading, music and practising her trombone. Liz started playing for Illogan Sparnon band in 1989, then moved to Porthleven band, and then finally St Stythians in the summer of 2006. An integral part of the new-look trombone section, Liz moved from baritone to trombone only a short while before joining us, and is taking to it brilliantly.

 

She enjoys playing all music, especially swing and jazz.

 

She doesn't enjoy playing test pieces.

 

Her most memorable moment as a player was passing her grade 4 exam on baritone, at the age of 49!

 

 

Will Dove - Bass Trombone

 

Progressing to the senior band in time for the 2006 summer season, Will is yet another one of the many band members to have progressed from our successful academy. He is also a keen sportsman and enjoys playing rugby, cricket, and most sports in general. Of course he also enjoys playing in the band, as 'band is life'.

 

He enjoys playing marches and swing music.

 

He doesn't enjoy playing dull music like 'Favourite Marches and Hymn Settings of the Salvation Army'.

 

His most memorable moment as a player was winning the the South West Championship '04 with the Youth band, and winning Bugle '06, conducted by the legendary Mr Berryman.

 

 

Ken Tresidder - Eb Bass

 

Ken started playing on Euphonium with the Camborne Town Band before moving to St Stythians in 1961. Soon after that he was promoted (?) to Eb Bass. He became secretary in 1979, and plays a very active role in the running of the band. Ken became the resident conductor of the Youth band in 2000, where he has done a brilliant job overseeing its development.

 

His most memorable moment(s) as a player were playing at the national finals on four separate occasions with St Stythians, most notably when they finished 2nd in the 2nd section national finals in 1963.

 

He enjoys playing marches and tuneful test pieces.

 

He doesn't enjoy playing waltzes.

 

 

 

Francis McWilliams - Eb Bass

Francis is from St Ives. He was a history teacher at Redruth school, but has recently taken on work for a building company. Before joining St Stythians in 2004 he had played for Lanner, Caharrack & St Day, and Illogan Sparnon.

 

His most memorable moment as a player was playing at the national finals held in London '95 and Dundee '03 with Lanner band.

 

He doesn't enjoy playing 'Favourite Marches and Hymn Settings of the Salvation Army'.

 

 

David 'Chield' Burliegh - Bb Bass

 

David is a trained toolmaker and is his job now involves gardening. He has been a member of the band since he started playing in 1965.

 

His most memorable moment as a player was a concert at Truro cinema with Ben Luxton.

 

He enjoys playing something with a bit of go and tune.

 

He doesn't enjoy playing Star Lake and 'Favourite Marches and Hymn Settings of the Salvation Army'.

 

 

 

John Nicholas - Bb Bass

 

 

 

Mary King - Percussion

 

Mary is training to be a midwife at Treliske hospital. Outside of band she is a football coach for the Falmouth girls team. Mary is a huge follower of Arsenal, and used to play for the Arsenal women's team. Mary joined the band for a contest in 1995, with her piano skills suiting her ideally for tuned percussion. A decade on, and Mary is now an accomplished Kit and Timpani player!

 

Her most memorable moment as a player was the Pontins experience 2005. It was her birthday that weekend, and the band threw her a Halloween party!

 

She enjoys playing most music in general, particularly marches and swing.

 

She doesn't enjoy playing 'Favourite Marches and Hymn Settings of the Salvation Army', as there are no percussion parts
