Guest Report > Copenhagen (D Tape)

This first guest write-up comes courtesy of Dan, on his trip to Copenhagen with Chris - where the search for cheap beer was particularly challenging......

Day 1
Chris and I set off for Copenhagen via Stansted on Friday morning. After a few pints in the airport, the plane and Denmark beckoned. After buying a Copenhagen card and a very efficient train link into town we decided to check out Tivoli gardens (the local theme park) as they were open until 1am and had a free rock concert. Be warned though, this place in expensive - even for Denmark - at ~ £5 a half litre.

After being fired down a 150ft column twice, riding two small roller coasters, being upside down on some mad twirling, spinning nightmare machine and getting a mild dose of sea sickness on the Monsoon it was time to eat. The Viking buffet beckoned (top grub including Reindeer) leading to a near coronary for Chris “£8.50 for 750mL of lager!!!!”

We finished the night with the rock concert and three goes on the Demon rollercoaster. This was an expensive night but there were less than 10 min queues on all the rides (multiride pass essential ~ £19, NB we went on £65 worth of rides).

Day 2
Decided to do some touristy stuff: museums etc. Found out our hotel was in the dodgy part of town: sex shops and prossies abound ( I sure know how to pick em). Decided to go native on the night out by visiting the Seven Eleven and buying a six pack each, far more reasonable £1 a tin.

Feeling reasonably oiled we set off for the town and drank in two different Irish bars (Copenhagen seems to have a lot of these - we saw at least 8) - price about £4 a go. We then went looking for a student bar mentioned in the guide books and we found it - “The Moose” were doing happy hour for what seemed like all night. At £1.50 a 0.5litre we stayed here until the munchies hit and the hotdog stands became attractive. Still not sated, Burger King was our salvation.

Day 3
Went to the zoo and the Superb Carlsberg visitors centre. Excellent value at £4 entrance, you get the centre plus two 250mL tasters of the various beers. I had Tuborg gold (very nice - a lot like Urquell) and Jacobsen brown ale (again nice - a bit like Leffe brun). Didn't really go out this evening - stayed in with lots of booze from seven eleven (We were both knackered after a long days walking).

Day 4
More touristy stuff including a boat cruise and castle ruins, Had a couple of quick Tuborgs in the Dubliner (yes, another paddy bar) before going to the seven eleven to stock up on Carlsberg Elephant (at 7.3% this stuff is surprisingly drinkable (i.e. you can )). Went to an English and a Scottish bar before heading back to the hotel to pack for the journey home.

In summary, Copenhagen is a cool place: great beer and fit birds, but you do need a wad the size of Liberia's deficit to have a real bender. If you have the cash there are plenty of night spots and strip bars all open to about 5am. Plus Seven Eleven rules!
