The Pub Guide > Abingdon

North Abingdon

Spread Eagle - Great loacally pub. Older clientelle, but a really nice atmosphere. Dart board, small garden, Aunt Sally (it's an oxfordshire thing...) and a good range of beers - Speckled Hen, Morlands Original, Greene King IPA and a guest ale on at all times - at good quality. Plus I used to work there :-)

Boundary House - Large garden out the front, but a towny pub. Expect to see most people wearing baseball caps and sporting kids in pushchairs. Usually feels like a creche at the weekends. Same beers as the Spread Eagle (except no guest ale) but will give you gut rot in the morning. Change of management in summer 2003 has also resulted in short measures with almost every pint served. Nice food though, and a good dining area. (since writing, I think this has changed hands again, and is back to being a halfway decent drinking hole)

The Ox - Towny football-obsessed-locals public bar, but nice quiet second bar. Yet another Morlands pub, but only two beers on cask at a time.

College Oak - 30-something towny pub (spotting a theme in Abingdon yet?!) Nice enough if you keep to yourself. Sky sports, nice patio garden, Aunt Sally, but poo beer (GK IPA)

Town Centre

Blue Boar - Towny pub - baseball caps, old slappers. Nice place though - serving cask Tetleys and a couple of others. Garden out the back, and is on two levels if you want to escape the inbreds.

The Grapes - The only late licensed pub in Abingdon (unless you count Starttons), with a large patioed garden. Very modern, but very modern prices too - don't expect to get change from a fiver for 2 pints...No ale, but have Budvar on tap, which is supposedly not very common (and hence expensive) Also do cocktails, which can get a bit messy in the early hours. Bouncers on the door keep out the pikies though, which is good.

Kings Head and Bell - Really nice pub. 2-3 bars, live music room upstairs, old, traditional style place. Big patio garden with loads of benches (and Aunt Sally). Good beer - featuring Adnams as regulars and a couple of other casks. One of the best nice pubs in Abingdon.

The Stocks - Attached to a hotel, has three rooms, and a patio area (feautring a set of ...you've guessed it) Nice enough place - only has Worthys 1774 on cask, but certainly wirth a few drinks in there.

Nags Head (on the Thames) - Has a huge garden that runs along the side of the Thames, pool tables and a couple of different levels. Think they only have one bitter, but a really good place to go drinking nonetheless. Live music area/DJ at the weekends. Get a lot of younger people in there.

The Plough - A local pub for local people. Do not enter unless you're over 40 and think Deliverance is a comedy.

The White Horse - Real ales, good food, but you can't help but feel it's a dirty little place. Looks lilke it might have trouble quite regularly, but if you go during the day it's probably quite pleasant.

Strattons - If you like dark, sticky carpetted small clubs then it'll be heaven. Features the 16-18s and 40-45s - speaking to a couple of locals it appears the school girls go there with their divorced and separated mums for pulling trips. It's that classy. Free before 11pm, £5 after. It'll be empty before midnight - purely becasue noone wants to go there - it's just Grapes get selective about who they let in after 11pm, and it's the only other place to have a late license in Abingdon. Cheese room and modern dance/hard house/commercial dancefloor. It's addictive in the same way as drugs are....you know it's bad, but you keep going back for more...... :-).
