Reiki

"Reiki" (pronounced ray-key) is a gentle, harmless therapy based on an ancient healing system. It reinforces the body's natural ability to heal by balancing subtle energies, whether physical, mental, emotional or spiritual and treats the whole person, not just the symptom. The treatment is suitable for everyone from the very young to the very old.

The Reiki session usually lasts for 1 hour. The recipient remains fully clothed and lies on a couch or sits on a chair. The practitioner transfers the energy through a series of hand positions placed non-intrusively on or near the body. This flow of energy can sometimes be felt as a gentle heat or tingling, usually where a blockage is being cleared. As the body is bought into a state of balance, stress and tensions are released resulting in a deep sense of relaxation. Some people will see colours or receive insight into a problem area in their life: many fall asleep.

After the session, the recipient will experience a general feeling of wellbeing. Some people will feel more balanced and relaxed, others will be energised or have a new confidence in themselves and some will report an ease of movement or less or no pain. One session will be sufficient for many whereas those with chronic problems may require more treatments. The benefits usually continue for at least 3 - 10 days afterwards and often the original problem does not recur.

Reiki practitioners are not trained in diagnosis. If someone is concerned about their symptoms they should see a doctor. However, as a natural form of healing Reiki can support and enhance traditional or complementary treatments.
