About the Artist

All our figurines are sculpted by Artist Gary Parsons, who, after many years in the building trade, took a life changing decision to pursue is artistic talents.  He took a trade test for Country Artists and was taken on as a trainee figure painter,  after only a short amount of time in training his natural ability shone through and he was promoted to an originator (the artist who paints the first cast for all the other painters to copy).  It was while he was at Country Artists that he began to take an interest in Sculpture, at that time (1997), Gary had 4 Akitas and was a regular exhibitor at dog shows it became apparent that there were not any lifelike  models of the Japanese Akita in the UK and so he decided to have a go at making one for himself.  He had a friend who could mould and produce the casts and that first model turned out magnificently, soon friends fellow exhibitors got to see it and wanted one, then people started to ask fro other breeds and so he decided to try to become a mature student and study Sculpture "to learn how to do it properly".

As he had given away all of his previous drawings and paintings he had done when he was younger the only proof of his artistic talent was his model of the Akita, the Lecturers were impressed and he was accepted onto the course on the strength of that one piece of work. He studied at Stafford College of Art and gained a HND in Figurative Sculpture with the highest marks ever achieved by a student, being awarded 17 distinctions out of a possible 18.  His “end of year piece” being a 9 foot statue of a Centaur that was bought by a private collector after being on public display. (If you would like to see how the Centaur was made click here).  Another piece was a concertina style relief commissioned by a Local Council. Other private commissioned pieces include; busts to life size studies of human and mythological creatures.

On leaving college Gary started his company Sukari Sculptures producing a range of high quality resin dog figurines. The range now consists of 17 breeds, most are of the less common breeds but also includes, due to the request of the UK's top breeders, some of the most popular including the Rottweiler.

Each figurine takes months of research before Gary even starts to model, this research involves reading as much as possible to gain an insight into the character and unique traits to that particular breed, this is just as important to our discerning customers as the physical appearance.  As his models are never based on one single dog Gary will then study as many individual dogs that he can consulting  top breeders as to which part of each dog best meets the breed standard as well as which does not!  Being a breeder and exhibitor of champions himself Gary understands that it be quite perturbing to be asked to point out their top winning champion's worst feature (although any good breeder will always know even if they do not like to announce it to the show world).

By this time Gary will now have a mental picture of how the subject should look.  He will then begin to model, this process can take an indeterminable amount of time.  On occasions it has looked as though it is almost finished but if he "feels" that something is just not quite right, that version can end up on the studio floor and being started again from scratch!  Once he is happy with the rough draft, Gary will then show it to as many breed people as possible for a "critique" and once any final adjustments have been made it is then moulded and the first casts are pulled and ready to be painted.
