THE SWIMMING DRAGON SCHOOL

The School was formed in 2000, the Chinese year of the dragon, mainly to study Sun Style of Taijiquan. However although Taijiquan is the main art studied the other internal Sun Family arts are not neglected. The twisting and turning movements of the evasive art of Sun Style Bagua is likened to those of  a swimming dragon.

The three most recognised Chinese internal martial arts are Hsing-Yi-Quan, Bagua-Zhang and Taiji-Quan (often written as Tai Chi). These arts are referred to as the three Chinese sisters and related by common principles to a brother internal Japanese art called Aikido. These internal arts are collectively known as the Neijia while external arts like karate are known as the Wajia.

Sun Lutang experienced extreme hardship and poverty in his youth but through hard work became a master of all the three internal sister arts and in particular created his own Style of Tai Chi, now recognised as one of the four main styles of that art.

Originally called nimble stepping Tai Chi, the Sun Style of Tai Chi is noted for its flowing footwork with high stances that are kind to knee joints and a Qigong content that is claimed to aid a faster achievement of health benefits. The softly flowing movements and martial content not only suits young people but also older people find it is not too strenuous. In particular the style has been proven by Dr. Lam of Australia to be particularly beneficial as a complementary therapy for arthritis sufferers.

Beginners are welcome if they are prepared to put long serious study in,  to get the serious benefits out. The casual and curious will go away after a few visits as empty as they came. The School is run on a non-profit basis and was founded to provide facilities for local enthusiasts who want the study the Sun Family arts to enhance their health and lifestyle.
