24/03/08 - Ipswich Race report

Heat 1 - 41 cars

336 leads the pack off from the whites down the home straight on a dusty track.  336 takes up the lead ahead of 279 and 76. 484 spun on the scoreboard bend on lap 2, then 376 blew his engine and 41, 40, 383 and 279 all end up in the fence.  The yellow flags came out and the positions were for the restart were ace for the restart were 336, 76, 10, 393, 21, 58, 27, 94, 686, 127 and 391.  Out of the race for the restart were 376, 40, 279, 383, 219 and 59.  27 and 51 pulled off before restart.  When they got going again 393 pushed 10 wide to go into 3rd place on the turnstile bend then 58 pushed 393 on pit bend.  The positions were 336, 76, 21, 393 and 58 with the first superstar being 482 and well clear of others.4 spun on the pit bend and 393 got up to 2nd place. 21 then pushed 393 offline and 10 spun and collected 21. The top 5 (336, 21, 393, 58 and 482) were now all together bumper to bumper.  21 took over the lead from 336, 482 and 393 who were all bumper to bumper.  393 got back past 482 and was back up to 3rd, then 21 gets held up by back marking 17 and is forced wide, 482 pushes 393 wide and this allows 58 comes past into 2nd.  The positions were 482 leading 58, 393, 21, 36 and 336. 393 got pushed wide by 21 and upfront 482 was now pulling away from 36, 51, 393 and 58.  With 1 lap to go 482 slowed down and handed the lead to 36.  As they come around the final bend 36 took the win ahead of 21 and 393.

Heat 2

A snow blizzard swept across Foxhall Heath at the start of heat 2, which made the track very wet and slippery.  When the green flagged dropped 337 was first to spin on the Scoreboard bend.  336 led them away once again and 454 was a non starter.  279 was leading after 3 laps ahead of 686, 76 and 336.  391 went over the bonnet of 483 and rolls over onto his roof on the scoreboard bend which brought out the red flags.

The race was restarted and non starters were 454, 94 and 127.  The track was still slippery and 279 went wide on restart and 10 slid wide and was collected by 82 and 27. 41 spun out and got hit by 484.  Upfront 279 got pushed wide by 336.  10 crashed at the end of home straight with the back wheel snapped right off and the brake disc and other bit of the car on the track.  41, 36 and 4 all hit the wall and 416 and 40 were also both out on the scoreboard bend.  The track was still very slippery and 483 got pushed into the wall on the scoreboard bend.  There were cars spinning off all over the place as the snow continued to come down.  According to scoreboard 686 was leading 58 and 21, but it was 393 leading 686 with 482 now up to 3rd 58 4th and 51 5th.  393 crossed the line to take the win ahead of 482 and 686.  Jason Cooper had the ride on the Control car, but after checking the transponder readouts the win was awarded to Dean Hummerstone.

Final

The Snow had stopped for the final but the track is still very greasy. 337 and 279 led them away. 279 spun it on the scoreboard bend and so did 337 with the latter doing a 360 and then hitting the wall hard.  686 got past and into the lead ahead of 127, 94, 336 and 393.  337 got to the infield with a flat tyre and broken front bumper. 58 pushed 393 wide on the back straight and both went side by side into the scoreboard bend.  58 put the bumper in once again on 393 this time really hard and spun 393 out on the scoreboard bend only to get collected by 123.  Back upfront 686 was leading by the length of a straight lead. 391 and 233 both went in hard on the scoreboard bend.  58 got past 127 and up to 3rd and 482 was the first star man. 686 was still leading with 58 now up to 2nd ahead of 94, 127, 27, 219, 336 and 482. 686 still has a length of a straight lead meanwhile behind him it was manic.  482 was coming up the order fast and was now in 3rd place, meanwhile behind the star men were all pushing and shoving.  94 dropped down the places and then got spun on the pit bend. The star men were all still fighting it out 4 abreast at times.  686 was now pulling away in the lead by almost half a lap over 482 and 58. 219 got past 58 to move up to 3rd place.  136 was also coming up the field quickly and now up to 5th place.  69 pushed 40 wide on the scoreboard bend to go into 6th place only  for 612 to push 69 wide for 6th, however 40 had other ideas and got past them both on the scoreboard bend to take 6th place. 482 was now gaining on 686.  36, 565, 60 and 123 were all 4 abreast coming out of the scoreboard bend.  With 5 laps to go 686 was losing grip on the lead with the gap reduced to half a straight lead over 482 and 219.  482 finally caught 686 and got up the inside and then managing to pull away from 686 and 219.  further back 51, 69 and 416 were all having a good race and 612 pulled off with 2 laps to go. 482 was now well clear of 686 and 219 and this is how they finished.

20/03/08 - Midget Driver switches to Superstox

Former Midget driver Dave Smith, who was featured in the November issue of Short Circuit is the latest of a list of new drivers joining the Superstox.

Dave started racing at 13 in the Ministox at Ringwood in 1998. He wrote off his self built car in the final of his first meeting, then bought a new car and got to red grade after about a year. At 16 he sold the mini and bought a 1300 Starlet stock car and got to blue grade, before selling the car at 18, to buy the GP Midget, that he raced up to the end of 2007. Dave's scored some good results in the midget (3rd in 2007 world, 3rd in 2004 British, 2nd in the 2006 Irish cup and 2nd in the 2004 Euro).  Dave has acquired the ex Mark Crisell superstox and hopes to be out racing in about 6 weeks.  He is looking forward to racing against his former Midget racer/friend Andy Collins.

16/03/08 - Former World Champ to Return

There is strong rumour that Former World and Multi Champion, Mark Kelman is planning a come back to Superstox.

12/03/08 - Short Circuit Link

Just a reminder to order a copy of the Short Circuit Magazine or to renew your annual subscription, please click on the oval shop link at the top of this page.  For all orders received via this site I earn a small commission which helps towards to running costs of this site.  Thanks.

03/03/08 - Another new driver

The former Colin Bradley Higman, more recently owned by Kevin Hardy #63 has been sold.  Chris Watts has bought the car for his 17 year old son Ashley, who used to race Mini's at Standlake Arena in Oxford.

20/02/08 - Autograss drivers switch to Superstox

There will be 3 new drivers out in a Superstox this year mainly thanks to Superstox Driver Darren Cornwell #27.  Darren has convinced 3 Ex Autograss mates to buy a Superstox.  First to convert was Simon Williams #52, who has bought Jason Barraclough's #314 HCD car in January and after a bit of testing hopes to make his debut around Easter.  Next was Tony Wilson #10, who has bought Mac McCutcheon's #34 HCD.  After a few practice laps at Arena a debut Easter Monday at Ipswich is likely.  The other (for the meantime) is Mark Hall who has just bought Terry Spooner's #406 Randall as a rolling chassis, and hopes to get an engine built and get out on track as soon as possible.

Darren said, "There's nothing wrong with grassin, if two of them had sold their race cars they would have been out last year, its just seems to have happened all at once. But provided you don't crash on the first lap there is a lot more track time and I don't miss having to jet wash the car off after every meeting"

One final point in this story is all 3 cars were sold as direct result of this website, so if you have a Superstox For Sale there is no better place to advertise it than here.  You never know some of Darren's other Autograss mates may buy it :-)

16/02/08 - Website back up

Apologies to our readers for the website being down for most of this week, but as you can see its now back up and working.  Being out of the country on business this week did not help in getting it sorted sooner, and I still do not exactly know the route of the problem, so I hope it does not happen again?

11/02/08 - For Sale

Ex Shaun Brooker HCD Superstox added to the for sale page.

04/02/08 - Picture Problems

I've recently noticed  that lots of the picture galleries have disappeared.  According to the FlickR website it tells me "You've run into one of the limits of a free account. When you moved from Yahoo! Photos, you were given a free trial of Flickr pro - our premium account that comes with unlimited storage and uploads. But, that's expired".

I am in the process of looking into a new Free photo sharing site with unlimited storage.  However if anyone can recommend such a site then please drop me an E-mail.

04/02/08 - Walmsley - Supers First Priority

The oval racing legends website (www.ukovaltracklegends.homecall.co.uk) has recently reported that Mike Walmsley has snapped up Micky Preston #36 oval Legend car.  Mike's wife Hilary has confirmed Mike has bought a Legend but stresses, "I'm afraid you haven't got rid of Mike yet! Superstox is the first and only formula he has ever raced in and he just fancied a go in something different. Superstox will still be his first priority but he has bought the Legend to try out and have some fun with. It will be a busy year as we are building a house too which Mike has been cracking on with recently".

18/01/08 - Superstox at Coventry?

Derek Fear recently came across the website for Coventry Bees Speedway, and was suprised to see this picture of Darren Cornwell's #27 Superstox on their site.  The picture is used as a link to Stock car racing at Coventry Stadium, but it seems a strange picture to use when Superstox don't race at that stadium?  Click here to see the site

13/01/08 - NEC News

Yesterday I visited the annual Autosport Show at the NEC Birmingham.  The rumours regarding Sparkie having a CBM (Burgoyne) car were true and it looked very good on the raised platform on the Spedeworth stand.  Other new Superstox on display and a suprise to me were a HCD of Daniel Rutterford.  Daniel used to race under the #144 in the National Superstox era, before moving to F2's.  However this time around Daniel's will race under the #4.  The other car also a HCD belonged to Jody Rutterford #94, and will be running a solid front axel rather than the common wishbones.

Pictures of all 3 cars can be found by clicking here or via the picture gallery.

07/01/08 - Who's Superstox is this?

Many thanks to Steve Linfield for getting in touch and confirming this was his Dad's old car.  This is what Steve had to say:

That was indeed my dad's old car, and I raced it for a few meetings at Ringwood in 1995 too.   We then sold it in 1996 to a guy called John Harris who raced it a few times and his son whose name I cant remember, but raced Bangers there too also had a go.  They only did a couple of meetings in it between them, but when we were still racing down there (98, 99, 00 etc) they were often watching saying that they were going to come out again at some point.  Clearly they cut the cage off and got as far as that.

The chassis of the car was actually a Higman built in the late 80's and my dad put the cage and bumperwork etc on it.   He sometimes went well enough at Aldershot to give the likes of Gary Chisholm and Darren Innocent a scare, and was always good on the shale at Wimbledon.

I guess they are only steel at the end of the day, but its almost sad to see it in that state now!

Cheers

Steve

06/01/08 - Back for 2008!

Back for 2008 is the winners page and an unofficial Track Championship page.  Both pages can be found by clicking the relevant link at the top of the page.

04/01/08 - Who's Superstox is this?

Jerry Fisher has been in touch and has recently come across this "Abandoned" Superstox in the area surrounding Ringwood Raceway.  Jerry wondered if anyone knew who last raced this car and when?  It looks like to me Richard Linfield's #464 car that he last raced in the 90's, however Mike Spence was Ringwood Superstox #145?.  If Richard's son Steve is reading this maybe he could confirm?  Otherwise if you know any details on this car please let us know?

01/01/08 - Shaun Brooker's WWW

No, Shaun Brooker has not set up his own website, he had another Wet Wimbledon Win!  Shaun was once again on form today at Wimbledon in the wet just like on the World final night.  This time he won the Winternational Championship and was followed home by Steve Sutch and David Miles Jnr.  Shaun also won heat 2 while Heat 1 was won by Steve Hamilton.

Full results can be found on the results page, and pictures can be found in the picture gallery or by clicking here.
