Superstox NFR 6
My Racing History
I've
watched Stock Car Racing from the terraces since the first week I was born in 1974,
but my racing
career did not start until August 2002 in the Ford Rods, which was a Mk3 & 4 Escort
budget formula
at Ringwood Raceway. At my first meeting I came home 6th in the final and
by my 3rd meeting I was winning races. It was a steep learning curve with
no previous experience as the Escort (on the left) had only been raced a few time prior to
our purchase, but it took me to 5 wins before an on track accident wrote it off
in July 2003.
By
now my brother Derek also had the bug to race and acquired a very used Ford Rod
(on the left), but a
change in circumstances put his racing on hold so he loaned me his car.
The car was riddled with mechanical problems but we finally got it sorted and
brought it home to a couple of wins in 2004,
but unfortunately for me Derek then wanted the car back to race himself. We started making plans
with RBD Fabrications to cage up a new car which soon was known as NFR 3 (No Fear Racing car 3).
Once the cage was done by RBD it did take me some time to get the car finished
and race ready (I'm a bit of a perfectionist) but we got it
ready for the 2005 season.
Being
a new car, NF3 (on the left) took some time getting used to it and getting set up, then
Spedeworth took over the running of Ringwood Raceway. Spedeworth allowed the
Ford Rods to continue racing but in the same races as the quicker Rookie Rods. Despite this,
I did manage a win against the Rookie Rods at Ringwood and was soon up to the Red grade. In
September of that year, a dream became a reality when Steve Hamilton kindly invited me to have
a go in his Superstox at a Ringwood practice day. I could not believe the
power compared to the Escort and after that I was hooked, and thought one day if
the right car came alone at the right price I'd get one!
In
2006 Spedeworth continued to allow Ford Rods to race with the Rookie Rods but
now at
all Spedeworth Tracks, which enabled me to forefeel another dream which was to
race at Wimbledon Stadium. After a few Wimbledon meetings in the Escort,
it was clear that I
had to make the switch to a Rookie Rod in order to be competitive. My
brother Derek,
had been running a Fiesta since the end of 2005 that he named NFR 4, so when I
Spotted a
Fiesta caged shell up for Sale at the end of January, I bought it and made the
decision to switch all the running gear over from the Escort to the Fiesta.
Then I had second thoughts, and felt maybe a Nova would be better. But this would
mean learning a new car and engine and they were selling for over £1000 second
hand?
With
my mind still unsure, in April I spotted Mark Almeida's HCD Superstox for sale.
A rolling Chassis
with spares for £800, which was less than a Nova Rookie Rod!. I knew it was a good car as Mark had won many races
in it, so rang Mark and a deal was done. However before starting on the Superstox, I
decided to finish the Fiesta now named NFR 5 and make it ready to race, which
with other commitments and a young baby this took the rest of 2006.
So that now brings us up to date to 2007 when work on the Superstox (NFR 6) finally starts......................
