Syu Yu Kai

Syu Yu Kai is based on a very traditional style of karate, Gojo Ryu, which can be traced back to Okinawa in 1917. Elements from other styles of karate, such as Shotokan, have been incorporated to make a good all round style that appeals to a wide range of people, both young and old, male and female. Other aspects of self defence are also taught, some grappling techniques, locks and holds, raising awareness and boosting confidence.

As with most traditional styles of karate, there are three core elements to Syu Yu Kai, Kihon, Kata and Kumite.

Kihon

Kihon translates to basic techniques such as strikes, kicks and blocks. Each technique is generally learnt by itself and practiced repeatedly in groups of students. This is normally done moving in lines up and down the Dojo.

Kata

When a number of basic techniques have been grasped, they are strung together in a fixed sequence known as a kata and practiced in combination. A kata is basically a series of defensive and attacking movements, taking the form of an imaginary fight with several opponents approaching from different directions. Practiced without opponents, the movements are highly formalised but they do become second nature, so that in a subsequent self defence situation they tend to be applied instinctively.

Kumite

Kumite is sparing. Semi contact sparring is the norm at Sutton Martial Arts Centre, with the use of safety equipment such as mits and pads, this reduces the risk of injury. Beginners are not allowed to spar for the first three months, this allows time for them to learn the basic techniques, co-ordination and balance when using them on the move.
