Mid Wales OrienteersOrienteering MapsSORRY THIS PAGE IS DOWN UNTIL THE NEW WEBMASTER CAN WORK OUT HOW TO DO ALL THE CLEVER THINGS THAT MAKE IT WORK! Orienteering maps are specially made for the sport. Permission to hold an event is first obtained from the landowner. A base map is prepared, sometimes from Ordnance Survey material, but more often directly from air photographs, using a process called photogrammetry. Then club members, or sometimes professional orienteering mapmakers, visit the area and may spend many days surveying the terrain on foot, adding detail to the map which isn't shown on the base map. Finally an orienteering map is drawn at large scale - usually 1:10,000 or 1:15,000 - using the standard International Orienteering Federation symbols provided in a specialist computer mapping programme. A few examples of Mid Wales Orienteers maps are shown below.
